Cayambe Volcano. the third highest Volcano in Ecuador (5790m)

Cayambe is a massive extinct volcano. The peak is Ecuadorīs third largest and the third highest in the Americas north of the Equator. It is also the highest point on the Equator Line (4600m) on the south side. First climbed in 1880 by Whymper and the Carrel cousins.

Although technically not very difficult is easier than Cotopaxi, from the last year Cayambe is an easier climbing than Cotopaxi with a straight forward path. Snow storms and high winds are more frequent on
Cayambe than on many other peaks. It can be climbed year round, although January is said to be the best period. The name comes from the quichua word Cayambura
it means Cumbre grande de hielo (Grand summit of ice).

The refuge (4600m) is named after three well known Ecuadorian climbers who were killed in a 1974 avalanche. It has a permanent guardian, running water, gas stove, toilets and cooking facilities.

Day 1:
Departing around 8:30am we drive about 65km north east of Quito. The beautiful peak can be seen from a distance.
Cayambe is the only snow capped mountian on the Equator. Our 4/4 vehicle takes us right to the refuge via Piamonte ranch.

Day 2:
After midnight breakfast we start the adventure. The first hour is easy rock climbing before reaching the glacier. Following the standard route (Picos Jarrin) it will take us about 6 - 8 hours. The views towards the Amazonian basin are really spectacular. Allow three hours back to the refuge getting back to Quito at about 4 pm.
